Wedding Band Trend: The Greek Key

Many newly engaged couples consider engraving a meaningful phrase on their wedding bands to add a personal touch and significance to their rings, but what about choosing wedding bands with a meaningful pattern?

Ancient Greece is responsible for the advent of many modern day practices.  Philosophy, medicine, and architecture are just a few.  Classic Greek patterns are still widely used today, thousands of years later.  In fact, the Ancient Greeks may be the first culture to forge their wedding bands from metal, as opposed to hemp, as the earliest known wedding ring was.  Why not add a little extra meaning to your wedding bands and buy a matching set that pays homage to Ancient Greece?

The Greek Key, also called the Fret, is a pattern of interlocking right angle and vertical lines, like “Ts” and “Ls” locked together. The Greeks used it extensively in ancient times as a border motif, on everything from temples to pottery, and now the Key pattern has come to symbolize classic design and Greek culture.  When visiting Greece, you cannot miss the recognizable deco added to everything from taverna signs, tourist trinkets, and even municipal features like manhole covers.

The Romans adopted many Greek technologies and traditions, including using the Key pattern in architecture and mosaic motifs.  So did many other cultures, in fact, because of it’s simple geometric design, the Greek Key is one of the most widely used decorative patterns in history.  Like your marriage is meant to, the Greek Key has stood the test of time.

The Greek Key pattern has many interpretations to its meaning.  Some say the simple geometric pattern represents waves, the four seasons, or the cardinal points, but others say the pattern may symbolize the bonds of love and devotion.  Perfect for your wedding bands!  Some men and woman share love, but different tastes in jewelry, and prefer buying their wedding bands separately.   There are options for this, but also consider buying a matching wedding band set, which links this symbol of your commitment to each other stylistically.  Many brides and grooms are drawn to this idea and may compromise with one another on the design.

Here are a few wedding bands engraved with the Ancient Greek Key pattern for those of you who are in love with each other, and history!
