Handwoven Wedding Rings: Beauty in Simplicity

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Many years ago, the Celts created hand woven items such as jewelry, as an offering to their Gods.  Since that time, Celtic knot and rope symbols have come to symbolize relationships, the joining of two people in marriage, or our eternal lives as spiritual beings.  Handwoven wedding rings have been used for centuries.  In fact, the first wedding rings in recorded history were woven hemp bands used by the Egyptians.  Today, when you purchase a handwoven or knotted wedding band made of precious metals, such as gold, silver, or platinum, you are buying a symbolic and timeless piece of jewelry that represents rich cultural history.

Another benefit to choosing a handwoven wedding ring is that while simple, it is also delicately detailed and more unique than a standard wedding band.  The tightly woven strands of gold create a chiaroscuro effect, or a contrast between light and shadow, allowing the piece itself to create the design, as opposed to engraved pattern.

Handwoven wedding bands are also very versatile.  You can select a handwoven wedding ring that incorporates more than one color of metal, such as gold and white gold, so it is sure to match everything in your jewelry collection.  You can even find a handwoven wedding band that uses three colors, yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold, such as this example here.

Handwoven rings are great choices for both men and women, and offer the bride and groom a way to tie the look of their rings together.  The woman can select a handwoven wedding band that is small and delicate, while the man’s wedding ring can we woven with heavier strands of gold, or in a wider band, giving him a more masculine wedding ring.

To create a handwoven ring, the strands of gold, platinum, or silver are heated to increase their pliability and allow the jeweler to bend them to the desired shape.  Metal working tools are used, but the jeweler must also have incredible hand strength in order to produce a well-made handwoven wedding ring.  After the metal is woven, the artist then fuses the ends together, creating a seamless and beautiful wedding ring.

Take a look at some of these beautiful examples of handwoven wedding rings.

Follow Your Heart – Purchase a Platinum Wedding Ring

Monday, December 14th, 2009

In today’s tough economic climate making the choice between purchasing a platinum wedding ring or a white gold wedding ring can be a little more difficult.  You may have always had your heart set on a beautiful platinum wedding band, but now as you are shopping around and seeing the drastic price differences you may be considering settling for something else.  While white gold wedding rings are a great option and also very beautiful. However, if platinum is your most desired choice, here are some reasons to stick to your guns.  After all, your wedding ring is the most important purchase you will ever make.  It symbolizes your eternal love and commitment, and you will be wearing it for many years to come.  A few years down the road, the initial larger investment won’t be an issue, but the style and feel of your wedding ring always will.  It is very important that you select a wedding ring that you will love forever.

One reason that platinum is preferred over yellow or white gold is because it has a pure white color.  This feature brings out diamond brilliance better than any other metal.  If you are pairing your wedding ring with a diamond engagement ring, or including diamonds in your wedding band and you want to get the most sparkle out of your stones, purchasing a platinum wedding ring is the best choice. If your fiancé invested a good amount of money into your diamond solitaire, your platinum wedding ring will further enhance its beauty.

Another benefit to platinum is that it is heavier than gold.  Many people love the feel of a platinum wedding ring, its weight makes the ring feel much more solid and significant on their hand.  Platinum is also stronger than gold, and because of this there are many more design options available.  Many antique wedding rings are made from platinum because delicate and intricate designs are possible.  White gold was introduced as a less costly alternative, but it is much softer and can be more easily damaged.  If you want a detailed wedding ring design, platinum is your best choice.

Platinum is longer lasting than gold.  It needs less frequent polishing to maintain it’s beautiful luster, and when polished it looses less metal.  While gold will wear away when worn where platinum is merely displaced.  This means that over time, your platinum wedding ring will maintain more of it’s original quality than a white gold wedding ring will.  Also, the plating required to give white gold a platinum look wears away over time and requires regular maintenance.  While platinum wedding rings can scratch and show wear, all precious metals do, but the patina that develops with a platinum wedding ring is beautiful and many times desired.  Some honor the changes in their platinum wedding rings as a way to show the history of the ring, but again, those that want to maintain a beautiful can easily achieve this.

Follow your heart and buy the ring that you will want to wear forever.  Take a look at some of these beautiful platinum wedding rings:

Antique Wedding Rings: Timeless and Unique

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Many of today’s brides and grooms look to antique wedding rings as a way to symbolize their eternal love and commitment.  They forego the modern day designs because the antique wedding rings are more unique and become instant family heirlooms. But why are rings created in past traditions so sought after and beautiful?  What makes them different than designs from today?

They are different because, as jewelry technologies advance, jewelry designs develop along side them, and the creators of wedding rings try new techniques and use new materials.  Cultural changes also affect the way wedding rings are designed, but these differences are not just evident in the style of antique wedding rings, but in the diamonds as well.  Very early diamond gemstones were created by hand, lessening the precision and number of facets in each stone.  Diamond cutters select the cut they will use based on each individual stone, so that they can enhance it’s brilliance and lesson any flaws.  As cutting technology advanced, diamonds became more beautiful and brilliant.  Until the brilliant cut was introduced, most diamonds were only faceted on the top.  Today, jewelry designers use the brilliant cut to also created facets underneath the stone, drastically increasing the diamond’s sparkle.

Most antique wedding rings purchased today come from the 19th and 20th centuries after the brilliant cut became standard practice, so their diamonds sparkle well. They are also typically made from white gold or platinum, because these precious metals came onto the scene and were very popular for wedding rings at this time.  Platinum’s strength allowed jewelry designers new freedom to create intricate designs in the metal work, and the design movements of the time prompted many beautiful and unique wedding ring settings.

Some of the most beautiful antique wedding rings are influenced by the designs of the Edwardian period, about 1901 – 1915.  White on white was the trend during this era; there was a high use of platinum, diamonds, and pearls.  The designs were very feminine, fluid, and detailed.  Again, thanks to platinum’s strength over gold, Edwardian wedding rings could be designed with an airier framework and intricate detail.

Antique wedding rings from the Art Deco period, about 1920 – 1930, are also a popular choice today.  This was a period in America heavily influenced by culture and technology.  Fashion, art, and architecture were modeled after advances in transportation, economic hardship, and new cultural freedom.  Platinum was very popular for wedding rings at this time, but so was white gold because this new metal alloy was less expensive and not as rare.  Antique wedding rings from the Art Deco era are still very beautiful and unique, but much less whimsical than the Edwardian period.  Strong lines and colored gemstones were often used.

Today jewelry making technology has advanced further than the designers of the past could have ever imagined, and almost any design can be achieved.  Wedding ring creators of the past were limited in their use of materials and tools, but managed to create timeless designs that are still heavily appreciated and sought after.  This is why antique wedding rings make the perfect choice for any bride.  Take a look at some of these beautiful examples below:

The Perfect Match: Wedding Ring Sets

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

Are you getting married?  Congratulations on your upcoming big day!  If you have found this blog, you are likely shopping for wedding or engagement rings, and because these rings are arguably the most important items you will ever purchase, you probably have many questions.  For some wedding ring 101, take a look at this link: Wedding Ring 101 This page has excellent information on the basics of wedding and engagement rings; including buying tips, wedding ring metals, celebrity engagement rings, and wedding ring trends.

Are you already well versed on the basics?  One of the biggest concerns that brides have is not so much about the size of her engagement ring diamond, whether she should have a platinum or gold wedding band, or what kind of price tag these rings carry, but how her diamond engagement ring will pair with her wedding ring.

The easiest answer to this dilemma is purchasing a wedding ring set.  Traditionally, women wear the two rings together, with the wedding ring on the inside of her finger, closest to her heart.  In order to do this, the two pieces must match well; otherwise the combination could be very awkward and uncomfortable.  This is why the sets were created; designers make wedding ring sets to be easily worn together, on the same finger.  During the marriage ceremony, when the two rings are combined, just like the bride and groom, they seamlessly transform from two separate pieces, to one perfect match.

Some brides choose to only wear their wedding ring, and include the engagement ring on special occasions only. This is likely because she is concerned about damaging the engagement ring setting during daily tasks.  Most wedding ring sets are designed to be worn everyday, and therefore are much more functional than some diamond engagement rings can be.  In other words, the center diamond in wedding ring sets is less obtrusive than in some stand alone diamond solitaire settings. Other women wear their engagement ring on the right hand because it doesn’t function well with her wedding ring.  This, while perfectly fine, is not a traditional choice, and when you pair the rings on the same finger, you are adding a little extra size and flare to your wedding combination.

There is so much involved in planning a wedding; buying a wedding ring set saves time and kills two birds with one stone.  The combination means you don’t have to shop endlessly for the perfect separate pieces that match together, you have two rings that can be safely and comfortably worn on the same finger.

Save Money on a Platinum Wedding Ring

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Platinum is so beautiful that it has become a favorite wedding ring choice for brides and grooms.  The price of platinum is however, higher than gold, and in today’s tough economy, many newlyweds don’t have the resources to invest in a platinum wedding ring.

Named from the Spanish word, “platina,” or “little silver,” the silvery white precious metal became a favorite choice for wedding rings in the late 19th century. In fact, because the metal was so popular and came at a higher cost than gold, white gold was actually created to mimic the look of platinum, but cost much less.  This came to a halt during World War Two when the American government declared platinum a strategic metal.  This meant no more platinum wedding rings; the rare metal was reserved for military use only, and white gold took over the jewelry market.

Since World War Two platinum wedding rings have returned, but are still more expensive than gold wedding rings.  This is because platinum is very scarce on this planet, and much more rare than gold.  Every year 160 tons of platinum is produced, while there are 1500 tons of gold produced.  Also, platinum’s production process is much more difficult.  It takes five months to refine the ten tons of ore that the miner must gather to produce one ounce of metal for your platinum wedding ring!

A platinum wedding ring will weigh almost twice as much as the same 14k gold wedding ring.  This is considered one of platinum’s benefits because the heavier weight makes the wedding ring appear of higher quality, but some may not like this feel on their hands.  Either way, the added strength, luster, and tarnish resistance of platinum wedding rings above silver, gold, or white gold wedding rings, is what makes this metal a prime choice.  The color and shine of platinum will enhance the look of the diamond engagement ring you pair it with, and stand up slightly better than the other precious metals to wear and tear.

Do you want the look and feel of a platinum wedding ring without the price tag?  Why not consider mixing platinum with gold?  There are many benefits to this, and many beautiful wedding ring options.

-       Costs less than a 100% platinum wedding ring.

-       Adds interest and design to the wedding ring.

-       If you don’t want the heavier weight of a platinum wedding ring, the gold will make the ring lighter.

-       Two-tone designs blend well with any wardrobe.

Titanium Wedding Rings: Strength Meets Beauty

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Have you been considering a titanium wedding ring but unsure about using alternative metals?  Gold and platinum have been wedding ring standards for a century, but that may be changing.  Advancing technologies and fluxes in the economy have made the search for alternative metal wedding rings increase, and Titanium is not just reserved for industrial use anymore.

For more than a decade, the metal has become a favorite among jewelry designers across the globe, especially for wedding rings.  This is because while it is beautiful, titanium is also very strong and practical for jewelry that is worn regularly…like your wedding ring!  Titanium is lightweight like aluminum, but much more durable than gold or platinum, and much easier to manipulate than Tungsten.  It is also less expensive; purchasing a titanium wedding ring offers you the ability to size and engrave your ring, while saving a little on the price tag.

Take a look at some of these beautiful examples of titanium wedding rings for both the bride and groom:

White Gold Wedding Rings: Alternatives to Platinum

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Do you want the look of a platinum wedding ring, but in our current economy fear the price tag many platinum wedding rings carry?  There is a solution, try buying a white gold wedding ring!  White gold carries the look of platinum, but does less damage to your pocketbook.  White gold was developed in the 1920s as an alternative to platinum, and nearly one hundred years later, it is still a beautiful option for a wedding ring.

White gold is actually not white, but less yellow than traditional gold.  Because gold is an extremely soft metal, it is alloyed, so your gold wedding ring is actually a mix of gold and other metals such as palladium, copper, silver, and zinc.  The karat refers to the amount of gold in the mix.  24 karat gold is pure, but to increase strength, the best choice is either 14 karat or 18-karat mixtures for a gold wedding ring.  Because of the alloy, yellow gold varies in its color, depending on the amounts of copper and silver it is combined with.  Here in the United States, white gold is typically alloyed with nickel.

White gold and nickel mixtures will likely have a rhodium finish to give the wedding ring a high shine, resembling platinum.  Over time and everyday wear of your white gold wedding ring, the rhodium finish can begin to disappear and require maintenance.  The finish is easily returned to shine by a jeweler, but if this is something you are concerned about, you should ask questions when shopping for a white gold wedding ring.   Because rhodium plating is a very standard practice with white gold and nickel alloys, it is often not mentioned.

Want a white gold wedding ring that is more maintenance free?  You may also look for white gold that is alloyed with palladium.  This type of white gold is not as white and the gold and nickel combination, but it is also often not rhodium plated, so there would be no need to refinish the wedding ring down the road. White gold and palladium wedding rings are a little more expensive, but were very common in the United States during World War Two when nickel was reserved for military use.  Gold-nickel alloys made a comeback in the United States after the war, but currently, much of the white gold in Europe is still the gold-palladium mixture.

Gold is the traditional wedding ring metal and is an excellent choice; it is beautiful, modestly priced, and wears well. Many of the yellow gold wedding rings you will find will also come in a white gold option.  Below are some beautiful white gold wedding rings that would be great alternatives to pricier platinum:
