Coordinating Men’s and Women’s Wedding rings

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Wedding rings and other jewelry have changed a lot over the past several decades, and while today antique wedding rings and classic gold wedding rings are still very popular, there are more choices on the market to choose from.  Today we see wedding rings that make use of alternative metals such as stainless steel and titanium.  Historically inspired wedding rings are all over the market with patterns such as the Greek Key or the Celtic Knot.  There are also sleek and sophisticated modern styles like men’s wedding rings that include black rubber.  While jewelry isn’t quite as indecisive as fashion, it does ebb and flow with current trends and changes with new technologies.

Traditionally the engagement ring was the part of the wedding ring set that had all the pizazz; the wedding band would be a simple gold ring that had a message or date engraved on the inside, and the bride and groom would wear a matching set.  Many brides and grooms still follow this tradition, but today this is changing, and many soon to be married couples do not prefer wedding ring sets.  Several things likely influence this.  First of all, men are much more style conscience these days, thanks to media and celebrity promotion, and so more men care about what their wedding ring will look like; they want it to reflect their personal style.  Another reason for the change in the wedding ring set trend, is that there are more styles of wedding rings availed on the market today so couples don’t have to stick with the traditional gold band.  Both women’s wedding rings and men’s wedding rings have come a long way!

If you and your future spouse would like a matching wedding ring set but can’t seem to agree on a style, I suggest coming to a compromise by purchasing two separate wedding rings that have similar qualities and features.  Try this exercise: each of you selects five different wedding rings that you like.  Then compare the men’s wedding ring choices to the woman’s wedding ring choices and select the two that best match.  This way you both have the perfect wedding ring that reflects your individual personality and style, but coordinates well with your spouses ring, further signifying your eternal love and commitment to each other.

For some ideas, see these coordinating rings below:

Trend: Diamond Wedding Rings

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

The strength and beauty of diamonds comes to symbolize the love and commitment of two people in marriage.  Their unmatched brilliance and luster have earned them a place in wedding ring design, but traditionally, the diamonds in wedding ring sets were reserved for the engagement ring, and the wedding bands were simple gold bands that matched between the bride and groom.  Today, our fashion senses are increasing, and men’s wedding rings as well as women’s wedding rings are becoming more stylish and unique.  While some brides and grooms choose to match their wedding rings, others opt for different choices that suit their individual styles and personalities.  Diamonds aren’t just for engagement rings anymore, and they are no longer just a girl’s best friend.  Thanks to the new styles in men’s wedding rings, diamonds are a guy’s best friend too!

Diamond wedding rings are a hot trend, and because of the strong requests from consumers, jewelry designers are creating more and more unique diamond wedding ring options.  Many women love the look of pairing their diamond engagement ring with a diamond wedding band, but now that it has become commonplace for the groom to also wear a ring, men are opting for diamond wedding rings as well. Two-tone gold and diamond wedding rings are very versatile; the use of both colors of metal means they will coordinate well with your entire jewelry collection. White gold and diamond wedding rings, platinum and diamond wedding rings, and titanium and diamond wedding rings are also common choices.

The white metal of platinum beautifully enhances the sparkle of a diamond, making this a popular wedding ring metal for decades.  Today, however, the hottest trend in diamond wedding bands is titanium.  This is also a very white metal so it serves to promote the diamond’s brilliance the same way as platinum, but it is much less expensive.  Also, titanium is stronger than the precious metals like white gold and platinum, ensuring a beautiful diamond wedding ring that will last a lifetime. The colors and properties of diamonds and titanium pair very well together, giving the bride and groom a symbol of their love and commitment that is equally as strong.

Eternity rings, also called anniversary rings, are also being used as a bride’s wedding band.  These rings are surrounded by a row of diamonds and pair extremely well with a diamond engagement ring.  Take a look at some of these diamond wedding ring options below:

Christmas Wedding Ring Stories: Some take while others give

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

The winter Holidays are full of emotion, both the negative and the positive kind.  During this favorite time of year, many people feel in the giving mood and not only purchase gifts for their friends and loved ones, but donate gifts, time, and money to charities.  When the Christmas Spirit is alive in the air, many offer more than they would during other less festive times of the year, and organizations that rely on donations look forward to December contributions.  While the Holiday’s are a giving time, they are also a time where many less fortunate folks can become depressed and perhaps act in harmful and negative ways.  There is an increased stress level among many scrooge-like Americans, and crime can actually increase.  The winter holiday news is full of stories of both the giving and the taking kind.

This month in Edmonton there was one such event, unfortunately not the giving kind.  Cam Fraser has been playing Santa Claus for the local “Uncles and Aunts at Large,” Christmas party for the past 25 years, but this year may regret it.  Prior to attending the event, Fraser placed his wife’s unique diamond wedding ring into a small jewelers bag so that he could take it in to have a missing diamond repaired.  Fraser was sure that the ring was in his pocket when he changed into his Santa Suite, but later it was missing.  It was not an extremely expensive diamond wedding ring, but it was rather unique.  Two-tone white and yellow gold, the wedding ring has five diamonds surrounded by several smaller diamonds.  He is so interested in the return of his wife’s wedding ring that Cam is offering a reward for its safe return and the jewelry store is aiding in his cause.

Stealing Santa’s wife’s unique diamond wedding ring definitely counteracts the positive Christmas spirit, but there are also new stories that remind us some people haven’t forgotten what is important this time of year.  Outside a King Soopers in Westminster County, someone slipped an extra special donation into the red Salvation Army kettle.  The Salvation Army has placed volunteers outside store entrances for decades, ringing their bells and eager for donations to help the organization feed and house the needy.  They are used to receiving extra coins, and perhaps the occasional dollar bills, but this time they received something much more valuable.  The mystery person, whether with a full and giving heart or an empty and broken heart, slipped an antique platinum and diamond wedding ring valued at $1400 inside the bell ringer’s red kettle.  There was no mistaking the gift as an accident because the ring had been placed inside a small plastic bag with a note that read, “For Salvation Army.”  The owner of this ring may have had some sad emotions backing their generous donation, but at least we can be reminded that while some take from others this time of year, some are very eager to give.

Handwoven Wedding Rings: Beauty in Simplicity

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Many years ago, the Celts created hand woven items such as jewelry, as an offering to their Gods.  Since that time, Celtic knot and rope symbols have come to symbolize relationships, the joining of two people in marriage, or our eternal lives as spiritual beings.  Handwoven wedding rings have been used for centuries.  In fact, the first wedding rings in recorded history were woven hemp bands used by the Egyptians.  Today, when you purchase a handwoven or knotted wedding band made of precious metals, such as gold, silver, or platinum, you are buying a symbolic and timeless piece of jewelry that represents rich cultural history.

Another benefit to choosing a handwoven wedding ring is that while simple, it is also delicately detailed and more unique than a standard wedding band.  The tightly woven strands of gold create a chiaroscuro effect, or a contrast between light and shadow, allowing the piece itself to create the design, as opposed to engraved pattern.

Handwoven wedding bands are also very versatile.  You can select a handwoven wedding ring that incorporates more than one color of metal, such as gold and white gold, so it is sure to match everything in your jewelry collection.  You can even find a handwoven wedding band that uses three colors, yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold, such as this example here.

Contemporary Tri-Color Handwoven Wedding Band

Handwoven rings are great choices for both men and women, and offer the bride and groom a way to tie the look of their rings together.  The woman can select a handwoven wedding band that is small and delicate, while the man’s wedding ring can we woven with heavier strands of gold, or in a wider band, giving him a more masculine wedding ring.

To create a handwoven ring, the strands of gold, platinum, or silver are heated to increase their pliability and allow the jeweler to bend them to the desired shape.  Metal working tools are used, but the jeweler must also have incredible hand strength in order to produce a well-made handwoven wedding ring.  After the metal is woven, the artist then fuses the ends together, creating a seamless and beautiful wedding ring.

Take a look at some of these beautiful examples of handwoven wedding rings.

A Christmas Wedding: Unifying the Bride, the Broom, and Christ

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

Sleigh bells, carolers, and nativity scenes make a beautiful backdrop for your big day. If you have decided to plan a Christmas wedding, perhaps you chose this special time of year because the birth of Christ has an important meaning to you, and you would like God to have a significant role in your marriage.  Whether your wedding is on December 25th or sometime during the Christmas season, tying the knot during the holidays makes this favorite time of year even more special, and gives you another great anniversary to celebrate every year.

Having a Christian wedding is more than merely holding the ceremony in a church.  There are other things you can do to include Christ in your big day.  From the décor you select, to the ceremony you plan, to the wedding rings you choose, here are a few ideas to express your love for God, and your spouse-to-be.

  • Ask your pastor to open and close your ceremony with prayer.
  • Ask the pastor to tell the story of the birth of Christ during the ceremony.
  • Light a Unity Candle, which symbolizes the union of the bride, the groom, and Christ.
  • Incorporate a bible verse that is significant to you, perhaps I Corinthians 13, in your wedding program.
  • Repeat this verse on your reception napkins, along with your names and wedding date.
  • Purchase a special bible and carry this along with your flowers as you walk down the isle.  Pass this tradition, and the bible onto your daughter for her wedding.
  • Include time in your ceremony for quiet prayer between one another, and thank Christ for the gift of your new spouse.
  • Instead of the Unity Candle ceremony, consider the Cord of Three Strands.  This represents the bride, the groom, and Christ at the center, binding you together and strengthening your union.
  • There are many beautiful options for your wedding band.  You could select a simple ring and engrave a Christian message or bible verse inside, or how about selecting a ring that is designed to remind you of your devotion to Christ and your marriage, and purchase a Christian wedding band?  There is a large selection of Christian wedding rings here, and look at  these two great examples below:

After the ceremony, years into your marriage, wearing a Christian wedding ring will remind you of your commitment to include Christ in your lives.  Whether your wedding is scheduled during the holiday’s to further rejoice the birth of Christ, or you want to incorporate Him in a ceremony you have planned outside the holiday season, these other Christian wedding ideas can add meaning to your big day and promote your desire the join together with your new spouse, and Jesus Christ.

Wedding Rings Sets Defined

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Your wedding ring serves as a symbolic representation of the love and commitment between you and your spouse.  The circle of the ring is never ending, just as your promise to love in sickness and in health.  The history of brides and grooms buying matching wedding rings sets to further symbolize their partnership dates far back, and there are many beautiful wedding ring sets on the market today.  Sometimes there can be some confusion when the term “wedding ring set,” is applied, so I will clarify the differences for you here.  There are two types of wedding ring sets, the bridal set, and the his and hers set.

Bridal sets are, as you likely guessed, for the bride only.  Many brides combine their wedding and engagement rings during the ceremony, and once married, wear them together.  The tradition dictates that she wears the wedding ring on the inside of her finger, closest to her heart, and the engagement ring on the outside.  In order to achieve this aesthetically and comfortably, the wedding and engagement rings must coordinate.  Sometimes this can be difficult, especially if the engagement ring is rather large and detailed.  To ease the wedding and engagement ring shopping process, jewelry designers have created what is called a bridal set.  These are two rings that are purchased together, and match together well.  Some bridal sets actually combine to form one larger ring.

His and hers sets are two wedding rings that match for the bride and groom.  These can be bought together, or separately, but allow the couple to match their wedding bands.  Most often, since the bride has smaller and more delicate hands, her version of the wedding ring set will be slightly thinner to accommodate, and because men have larger and more masculine hands, their wedding ring is wider and heavier, but this is not always true.  If the couple would like to wear exact matching rings there are other options as well.  In addition to a his and hers wedding ring set, there are many wedding rings on the market that are for either a bride or a groom, and can be purchased individually.

Purchasing a wedding ring set, whether a bridal set or a his and hers set, makes wedding ring shopping a little easier and less time consuming.  Today, many couples are selecting his and hers sets made of yellow gold and inset with diamonds.   Historic designs, like those that incorporate Celtic symbols, are also very popular, especially among the younger brides and grooms.  Whether you choose an exact match, or a slight variation, many couples also customize their wedding ring sets by engraving a message on the interior of the band.  Take a look at some of these very popular bridal sets and his and hers sets.

Antique Wedding Rings: Timeless and Unique

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Many of today’s brides and grooms look to antique wedding rings as a way to symbolize their eternal love and commitment.  They forego the modern day designs because the antique wedding rings are more unique and become instant family heirlooms. But why are rings created in past traditions so sought after and beautiful?  What makes them different than designs from today?

They are different because, as jewelry technologies advance, jewelry designs develop along side them, and the creators of wedding rings try new techniques and use new materials.  Cultural changes also affect the way wedding rings are designed, but these differences are not just evident in the style of antique wedding rings, but in the diamonds as well.  Very early diamond gemstones were created by hand, lessening the precision and number of facets in each stone.  Diamond cutters select the cut they will use based on each individual stone, so that they can enhance it’s brilliance and lesson any flaws.  As cutting technology advanced, diamonds became more beautiful and brilliant.  Until the brilliant cut was introduced, most diamonds were only faceted on the top.  Today, jewelry designers use the brilliant cut to also created facets underneath the stone, drastically increasing the diamond’s sparkle.

Most antique wedding rings purchased today come from the 19th and 20th centuries after the brilliant cut became standard practice, so their diamonds sparkle well. They are also typically made from white gold or platinum, because these precious metals came onto the scene and were very popular for wedding rings at this time.  Platinum’s strength allowed jewelry designers new freedom to create intricate designs in the metal work, and the design movements of the time prompted many beautiful and unique wedding ring settings.

Some of the most beautiful antique wedding rings are influenced by the designs of the Edwardian period, about 1901 – 1915.  White on white was the trend during this era; there was a high use of platinum, diamonds, and pearls.  The designs were very feminine, fluid, and detailed.  Again, thanks to platinum’s strength over gold, Edwardian wedding rings could be designed with an airier framework and intricate detail.

Antique wedding rings from the Art Deco period, about 1920 – 1930, are also a popular choice today.  This was a period in America heavily influenced by culture and technology.  Fashion, art, and architecture were modeled after advances in transportation, economic hardship, and new cultural freedom.  Platinum was very popular for wedding rings at this time, but so was white gold because this new metal alloy was less expensive and not as rare.  Antique wedding rings from the Art Deco era are still very beautiful and unique, but much less whimsical than the Edwardian period.  Strong lines and colored gemstones were often used.

Today jewelry making technology has advanced further than the designers of the past could have ever imagined, and almost any design can be achieved.  Wedding ring creators of the past were limited in their use of materials and tools, but managed to create timeless designs that are still heavily appreciated and sought after.  This is why antique wedding rings make the perfect choice for any bride.  Take a look at some of these beautiful examples below:

Titanium Wedding Rings: Not Just for Men

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Alternative metal wedding rings such as titanium or stainless steel have become very popular for men. While traditionally titanium was used in manufacturing, medicine, and engineering, in the last decade they have become a widely sought after material for wedding rings.  Because of their superior strength over precious metals like gold and platinum, their more modest price tag, and their unique beauty, many grooms decide to buy a titanium wedding ring, but what about the bride?  Titanium wedding rings are not just for men!  As one of the most durable metals on the planet, many active women are also choosing titanium wedding rings over the tradition gold or platinum variety.

If you are a bride that loves to be active, spend time outdoors, in the gym, or working with your hands, a titanium wedding ring is a perfect choice.  It is much stronger and less likely to scratch than a gold wedding ring, and any scratches you may incur can be easily polished away.

Titanium’s durability is not its only benefit; there are other many others.  One of titanium’s great features is that while very strong, it is surprisingly lightweight. The metal was named in honor of the Greek Titans, the Gods of mythology, and while stronger than steel, has the lightweight of aluminum.  This means that wedding rings made from titanium will be much lighter that gold or platinum.  If you select a titanium wedding band with comfort fit features, this ring will be very easy to wear. This is great for the bride that is not used to wearing jewelry on a daily basis.

Also, titanium is 100% hypoallergenic, and will not react to human skin.  Many people are allergic to other metals gold is alloyed with and can have reactions on their skin when they wear their wedding ring.

Men are attracted to titanium wedding rings because of their strength represents masculinity, but this strength is also a great metaphor for the love and commitment between the bride and groom.  There are also very beautiful and feminine titanium wedding ring examples available, some inlaid with gold, some including diamonds. What’s more, is that Titanium wedding rings can be just as stunning as a platinum wedding band, but with increased benefits at a drastically decreased cost.  In today’s volatile economy, it makes sense to save money where you can.  Take a look at some of these beautiful titanium wedding rings that would be great for BOTH the bride and the groom.  Maybe you two order a matching set!

The Perfect Match: Wedding Ring Sets

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

Are you getting married?  Congratulations on your upcoming big day!  If you have found this blog, you are likely shopping for wedding or engagement rings, and because these rings are arguably the most important items you will ever purchase, you probably have many questions.  For some wedding ring 101, take a look at this link: Wedding Ring 101 This page has excellent information on the basics of wedding and engagement rings; including buying tips, wedding ring metals, celebrity engagement rings, and wedding ring trends.

Are you already well versed on the basics?  One of the biggest concerns that brides have is not so much about the size of her engagement ring diamond, whether she should have a platinum or gold wedding band, or what kind of price tag these rings carry, but how her diamond engagement ring will pair with her wedding ring.

The easiest answer to this dilemma is purchasing a wedding ring set.  Traditionally, women wear the two rings together, with the wedding ring on the inside of her finger, closest to her heart.  In order to do this, the two pieces must match well; otherwise the combination could be very awkward and uncomfortable.  This is why the sets were created; designers make wedding ring sets to be easily worn together, on the same finger.  During the marriage ceremony, when the two rings are combined, just like the bride and groom, they seamlessly transform from two separate pieces, to one perfect match.

Some brides choose to only wear their wedding ring, and include the engagement ring on special occasions only. This is likely because she is concerned about damaging the engagement ring setting during daily tasks.  Most wedding ring sets are designed to be worn everyday, and therefore are much more functional than some diamond engagement rings can be.  In other words, the center diamond in wedding ring sets is less obtrusive than in some stand alone diamond solitaire settings. Other women wear their engagement ring on the right hand because it doesn’t function well with her wedding ring.  This, while perfectly fine, is not a traditional choice, and when you pair the rings on the same finger, you are adding a little extra size and flare to your wedding combination.

There is so much involved in planning a wedding; buying a wedding ring set saves time and kills two birds with one stone.  The combination means you don’t have to shop endlessly for the perfect separate pieces that match together, you have two rings that can be safely and comfortably worn on the same finger.
