Stainless Steel: A Hot Men’s Wedding Ring Trend

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Men’s wedding rings and other jewelry have become a hot topic in the past several years.  The sales of men’s jewelry are increasing due to extensive media promotion.  Men’s fashion magazines have been pushing for a more style conscience attitude and trendsetters like athletes and celebrities have lead the way.  Popular culture figureheads like David Beckham and Jay-Z are flashing wedding rings, bracelets, and pendants; men’s jewelry no longer just consists of watches and cuff links.  In addition, men’s jewelry now has a large younger market.  Basic gold wedding rings and formal watches their fathers wore are out, and alternative metals like stainless steel, rubber, diamonds, and leather are in.

This promotion has increased the availability of men’s jewelry, creating a wide variety of items to choose from; many jewelry designers are creating trendy lines just for men that include wedding rings, pendants, bracelets, and earrings.  One of the most popular trends in men’s jewelry and men’s wedding rings is stainless steel.  This metal is masculine and exudes a look of strength which both men and women find attractive.  While men are becoming more fashion conscience, they are also still a very practical gender, and stainless steel wedding rings and other men’s jewelry are versatile enough to wear on a casual day and sophisticated enough to wear to a formal event.

The information and Internet age, through websites like MySpace, Facebook, and YouTube, are making us a more appearance-focused society, and it is not just women who are aware of fashion.  Our photos and faces are broadcasted all over the web, and thanks to technology like Skype we even check the mirror before we make a phone call…looking good is more important to us than ever!

One reason that stainless steel has become such a desirable metal for men’s wedding rings and other fashion jewelry is because the look of the metal never changes.  It is strong and fairly scratch resistant, so requires little maintenance, again making stainless steel wedding rings very practical.  These features allow a man to wear a stainless steel wedding ring while engaging in sports and other active endeavors; where rings made of precious metals like platinum and gold should removed.

Men’s stainless steel wedding rings and other jewelry have moved from traditional and classic styles to modern and sophisticated styles.  Men’s fashion has become more varied, and thus so has men’s jewelry designs.  There is more variety on the market appealing to a larger audience.  Not only are men buying jewelry for themselves, but more women are purchasing stainless steel wedding rings, bracelets, pendants, and other fashion jewelry gifts for men.

Wedding Ring Trends: Men’s Wedding Bands

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

While this hasn’t always been traditional, today, most married men wear wedding rings just like their bride.  The trend began during World War Two when soldiers used a wedding band while overseas to declare their commitment to their wife back home and show others that they were taken.  Since that time, many men have apprehensively joined the men’s wedding ring club, opting for simple and practical wedding bands.  As the years have past and the practice becomes more commonplace, more and more men are choosing wedding rings that have a little extra style and flare.

Men’s wedding bands are no longer just basic bands, and if you think that your guy prefers a simple gold wedding ring, you may be surprised to learn he has something with more excitement in mind.  Here are some current men’s wedding ring trends that you should be aware of before you commit to your purchase.

Alternative Metal Men’s Wedding Rings:

Lets face it; men can play rough at times.  Traditional precious metals such as gold and silver are very soft so they can bend and become scratched easily.  This has lead to the popularity of non-precious alternative metals.  If you have an active man in your life, consider buying him a stainless steel or titanium wedding ring.  Take a look at these great examples!

Two Toned Men’s Wedding Rings:

Women love the idea of a two toned gold wedding ring because it will likely match all the other jewelry in her collection.  Your man may not have any other jewelry in his collection, but a two toned gold wedding ring is stylish and unique.

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Ladies, do you already have your perfect wedding ring selected and are now looking for that perfect masculine men’s wedding ring for your groom?  We may desire the expense of platinum and the sparkle of diamonds, but your guy may not be looking for something so flashy.  Don’t feel you need to match his ring to yours, consider sliding a stainless steel wedding ring on his finger during the ceremony.  Stainless steel rings are very beautiful, but also very practical. Some benefits include:

  • Style.  There are many beautiful stainless steel wedding rings on the market, so you will not be sacrificing style.
  • Customization.  Stainless steel wedding rings can be engraved and sized, where another alternative metal like Tungsten, cannot.

Comfort Fit: The Perfect Men’s Wedding Band

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Let’s be honest, many men do not look forward to the idea of wearing a wedding ring on their finger.  Ladies, it’s not because they don’t want to marry you, they are trying to hold onto their independence, or want to appear available to the blond at the bar. It’s most likely because they have never worn jewelry before.  The idea of a piece of metal on their finger is foreign, and to them, seems physically uncomfortable.  If this is the case in your groom’s situation, ease his apprehension by purchasing a men’s wedding band that fits comfortably on his finger.  First, be sure of his accurate ring size, then browse through the best thing to happen to men’s wedding rings, the Comfort Fit band.

The finger pinching days of before are gone now thanks to this men’s ring feature.  For people who must remove their rings frequently, or for those that are not used to wearing a ring, the Comfort Fit wedding band is the way to go.  Also, the design necessary for a comfort fit wedding ring usually means they will use more metal, which gives them a little more weight, making them an excellent choice for a men’s wedding ring.

The difference between a regular fit,or a Comfort Fit ring is the rounded edges of the band.  These curved edges allow the ring to slide more easily on your finger, lessening the chance of pinching.  The more curved the edge, the thicker the band, and the heavier the wedding band is on the “comfort fit scale.”  Men’s Comfort Fit wedding bands will also be slightly rounded on the outside.  This is much like a domed band, but the domed wedding band will not be round on the inside, which is what creates the comfort.

There are many Comfort Fit men’s wedding rings available today.  You can find the standard Gold and Platinum, but also consider a Titanium men’s wedding ring for the husband to be that works with his hands; Titanium is a much stronger metal, and he can be less careful with it.

Ease your groom’s apprehension to wearing a wedding ring and buy a Comfort Fit band.  Show him the difference between the two, and prove that while you insist he wears a wedding ring, you are also thinking about his preferences too. See some examples below, happy shopping!

Should a Man Wear a Wedding Band?

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Should a man wear a wedding ring?  The question may seem strange to some of you, but the truth is that up until recent years, it was very uncommon, and there are still many cultures today where it is not practiced.  Traditionally wedding rings were given to women as a symbol that she was “off the market.”  During World War Two, by some urging by the jewelry industry, many US soldiers began wearing a band on their left ring finger as a token of devotion to his wife while he was away at war.  These wedding rings publicized the GI’s marital status and told his wife back home that he intended to remain faithful and devoted to her.  Because this was not a common practice, the act of a man wearing a wedding band made a stronger statement.  In fact, prior to the Great Depression, only 15% of grooms wore a ring, and after the end of World War Two the percentage increased to 80%.  Today, while it is almost unheard of the groom foregoing the ring, some men have a little anxiety over the concept of permanent jewelry.  This is not likely because they will be advertising their unavailability, but because many men have never worn jewelry before, and the feeling on their hand can seem strange.  Also, many men are working in industries where a ring could get in the way, and damaged easily, so it becomes impractical.  I think most new brides and grooms want both parties to wear a wedding ring symbolizing their love and devotion to one another, so here are some things that may make the transition from the naked ring finger, to the adorned one.

First of all, consider comfort.  Men’s wedding bands of the past were rather rigid, and pinched the finger, making wearing one rather uncomfortable.  Today there are many comfort fit rings on the market designed to be much more ergonomic.  The interior is curved, so it doesn’t pinch the skin.  Second, consider durability.  Metals such as Stainless Steel, Titanium and Tungsten are incredibly strong, and won’t scratch and bend like Gold or Platinum.  These metals are great for men that work in dangerous trades.  Finally, consider the style.  Diamonds are no longer just for a woman’s wedding ring, but some men prefer a simple band with no detail.  His ring should reflect his personality, which will make it much easier to wear daily.  It is important to realize also, that regardless of the comfort, durability, or style, men may need to take their ring off from time to time.  Some men cannot do their job with a ring; others may prefer not to wear one in the gym while lifting weights.  Ladies, if they do remove their rings for reasons like these, remember, it is not because they hope the woman next to them on the treadmill strikes up a conversation, it is only due to man’s inert concern for practicality.

This simple, Titanium, Comfort Fit ring would be perfect for any man.

Men’s Wedding Rings under $200

Monday, November 16th, 2009

The perfect wedding ring doesn’t have to drain hard earned dollars in the savings account. Thanks to online merchants, there are many wedding rings on the market that offer an everlasting quality and fit the needs of those who have a strict eye on the funds or simply don’t want to spend unnecessary amounts of money on a wedding ring. Although gold ring prices have skyrocketed in the recent years, many high quality alternative metals are becoming more available especially on the Internet. Titanium wedding rings are just one of the many metals available today. Titanium is made from a reasonably priced and high value metal that serves as an appealing alternative to the more costly metals—gold and platinum.

Titanium Wedding Rings

Titanium wedding rings are great alternative to higher priced metals because of the extreme durable nature of this metal. Like Stainless steel wedding rings, rings made of titanium are resistant to most damage including scratching and chipping that usually happens to other metals from normal every day wear.  Despite titanium’s reputation in other industries of being a super metal, jewelry industry titanium is regarded as completely indestructible. When comparing the titanium wedding ring with rings made from common metals, titanium is considered the most durable.

Why spend thousands of dollars on a wedding band that you can only wear on the weekends? Titanium wedding rings will allow those hands-on-workers to display their wedding ring every day. The durability of this metal makes it ideal for those who work in laborious jobs—using their hands most of the time.

Unlike the sometime allergenic reactions that happen from the nickel alloy mixed with stainless steel wedding rings, titanium rings are praised for their hypoallergenic properties.  Those who have experience itching and discoloration of the skin from other rings in the past will not experience this undesirable reaction to titanium rings.  The hypoallergenic quality is another benefit to add to this budget friendly wedding ring metal.

The cost of titanium wedding rings is considerably less than platinum and gold, which makes this hypoallergenic metal a great choice for those who are on a frugal budget or simply don’t want to spend unacceptable amounts of money on their wedding rings.  Below are two lightweight titanium men’s wedding rings that offer both the durability and affordability that gives these rings their desirable appeal.WR09000241

This 6mm titanium metal wedding ring (on the right) has four milgrain and flanked smaller bands that have a gradually smaller design, which gives the beaded look to the small rings. The milgrain technique is usually done with an engraving tool. The edges were smoothly rolled to give the ring a more comfortable fit, making it nice for everyday wear. This ring is at the fair price of $152.50 on weddingrings.net.

This 8mm titanium wedding ring (below on the left) also has milgrain inner accent rings that give texture to the high polish finish. The design of the beveled cut gives the ring a more modern feel. The edges were rolled to give it a desirable comfortable fit, which makes it ideal for everyday wear.

Obama’s Unique Wedding Ring

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

On October 3rd 1992, Barack Obama slid a traditional wedding ring over Michelle’s finger, after she glided a detailed carved wedding band over his at the Trinity United Church of Christ. According to Nytimes.com, the “intricate” yellow gold wedding ring is carved in a design of Indonesia, where Obama spent some of his childhood years. In addition to being born to a Kenyan black man and white woman and raised by his white grandmother, Obama’s one-of-a-kind tendencies followed him right to the white house.  It’s not surprising that the Obama’s wedding ring is just as unique as his intercultural upbringing, which makes his choice to wear a carved wedding band seem like perfect fit.

Now more than ever, it seems as though more men are looking for matchless wedding rings, instead of the traditional gold wedding band. Luckily, a variety of men wedding rings has dramatically increased in the market over the past ten years, thanks to online merchants. Wedding rings featuring gemstones in the wedding band, and the use of alternative metals like palladium and tungsten instead of gold are becoming more available. Another ring gaining momentum on the market is the WR09000024_3tri-color gold wedding band, which makes for a fine stand out ring. These rings artfully combine white, yellow and rose gold metals to form a multifaceted look.

Alternative metals and the presence of gemstones have many desirable qualities, but nothing can match the character that a handmade wedding ring brings to the table. It is the very touch of the hand that gives these carved wedding rings a distinctive design, which often  captures the the eyes of the individualist. Many rings are created by the miraculous advances in technology, but hand carved weddings rings are simply styled by hand, making them one-of- a-kind among the many mass produced rings on the market today.

The design quality of a hand carved wedding ring enhances the aesthetic quality of  the traditional wedding ring. It gives the ring texture, which ultimately increasing the boldness of the ring. Various hand-carved wedding rings are available in many metals, with the most common being gold as well as platinum. Some hand carved wedding rings have a beaded look to them, and this is usually achieved by the milgrain technique. The milgrain technique is usually done with an engraving tool that creates these desirable features.

Last month, Barack and Michelle Obama were spotted celebrating their 17th wedding anniversary in a Georgetown Restaurant. The couple was dressed to impress for the special occasion, which is, according to Nytimes.com, not far from the couple’s usual preparation routine for their traditional Friday date night. Despite the design quality of the one-of-kind ring that hangs on Obama’s finger, it looks as though the President does have a traditional streak in him, or perhaps, the traditional streak is rooted by the First Lady.

Part one – The MANicure

About to be married women and men, consider this your public service announcement of the day.  If you are to-be-wed any time in the near future and plan on sporting brand spanking new wedding bands, please oh please get a manicure.

I know some of you manly men are groaning out there in internet land, getting a “mani” is a lady activity.  Well, here are two options to clean up those unsightly cuticles for your adoring wedding patrons (and don’t worry ladies, I’ll get to you next).

The Salon MANicure

Don’t pretend like half of you haven’t gotten a manicure before.  Maybe it was out of protest but deep down you know you liked it.  I mean who doesn’t like getting their hands massaged by cute little giggling Asian ladies?  If you really want to get into the whole experience, some nail salons have a hot wax treatment that not only feels divine but will leave those rough bear hands feeling incredibly soft and silky smooth.  Plus, you’ll get major points with the in-laws and if you want your groomsmen to impress those beautiful, and single, bridesmaids, bring them along too and call it “moral support.”

The Home-made MANicure

Ok, so if for some of you more macho types can’t swallow your man-pride enough for a spa day with the fiancé, how about a little home-made finger soak?

*Pour some hot water in a bowl and soak your fingers for about a minute to a minute and a half then dry.

*Take a pair of nail clippers, not those bulky straight-edge toe clippers but the round-edge lady ones, and continue to clip offensive hang nails and other miscellaneous hanging skin from around the nails.

*Then clip nails to a short length, and I’m serious about this, men with long nails have a huge creep factor and you don’t want to embarrass your lovely partner on the big day…do you, do you

*File away any ridges or inconsistencies and finally apply lotion to have baby smooth skin for all that hand shaking you’re going to do on your big day.

*Then think to yourself how much easier and more fun it would have been if you had just gone to the salon with your spouse-to-be?

Men, I know it’s a struggle even to get some gel in your hair and a razor across your face but above all those scruffy face, calloused hand days, you will want to look totally handsome on your wedding day, even if it’s just to impress your future spouse.

So, suck it up clip it down and show it off, you’ll thank me on your wedding night!

Durable Wedding Rings for Men

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

For men who work in particularly demanding jobs or simply lead active lifestyles and are hard on their jewelery, there are several types of durable wedding rings for men who need extra protection against damage.

Titanium

Titanium wedding rings are quickly becoming a popular choice for men, especially because of  the metals durability. When combined with different alloys, titanium is actually one of the strongest metals available for jewelry.

If you have metal allergies or a particular sensitivity to other metals, titanium is a great choice because of its hypoallergenic properties. What’s more, titanium wedding rings are extremely light weight and more resistant to damage than softer metals.

If you are interested in a titanium wedding band, you should be aware that titanium can still become scratched despite its durability. While you do not have to worry about rust or corrosion, rough activities can still damage the metal. To avoid potential problems, simply store the ring in a safe location away from other jewelery that can scratch the metal, and take it off before strenuous activities.

Tungsten

Tungsten wedding rings are not only strong, but they have a distinctive look that makes them a very popular choice for men’s wedding rings. What’s more, they are highly affordable when compared to other metals.

Tungsten offers unsurpassed strength and durability, making it the perfect material to craft men’s wedding rings from. In fact, it is the hardest metal available for commercial jewelry making!

Whereas softer metals may become damaged, scuffed or scratched during physical or labor-intensive activities, tungsten is resistant to scratches and makes them an ideal choice for men who lead active lifestyles.

Even though tungsten is a very strong metal, the fact that it is so strong actually means the metal is more brittle than others. Avoid exposing tungsten wedding rings to repeated blows, as this can cause the ring to fracture.

Platinum

While nowhere near as strong as tungsten or titanium, platinum wedding rings can still be a good option for men who can’t find those metals elsewhere. Platinum is more durable than gold, but also comes with a heavier price tag because of its rarity in comparison to more available precious metals.

However, if you are buying matching wedding bands and the bride-to-be’s band is made from platinum, then this metal does resist damage much better than softer metals, such as yellow gold.

With a little persistence and some effort, finding durable men’s wedding rings isn’t as difficult as you might think. Even for men who lead very active lifestyles or work in labor-intensive jobs, metals like tungsten and titanium can resist damage much easier than softer metals, and still look great as a wedding ring!
