Antique Wedding Rings: Timeless and Unique

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Many of today’s brides and grooms look to antique wedding rings as a way to symbolize their eternal love and commitment.  They forego the modern day designs because the antique wedding rings are more unique and become instant family heirlooms. But why are rings created in past traditions so sought after and beautiful?  What makes them different than designs from today?

They are different because, as jewelry technologies advance, jewelry designs develop along side them, and the creators of wedding rings try new techniques and use new materials.  Cultural changes also affect the way wedding rings are designed, but these differences are not just evident in the style of antique wedding rings, but in the diamonds as well.  Very early diamond gemstones were created by hand, lessening the precision and number of facets in each stone.  Diamond cutters select the cut they will use based on each individual stone, so that they can enhance it’s brilliance and lesson any flaws.  As cutting technology advanced, diamonds became more beautiful and brilliant.  Until the brilliant cut was introduced, most diamonds were only faceted on the top.  Today, jewelry designers use the brilliant cut to also created facets underneath the stone, drastically increasing the diamond’s sparkle.

Most antique wedding rings purchased today come from the 19th and 20th centuries after the brilliant cut became standard practice, so their diamonds sparkle well. They are also typically made from white gold or platinum, because these precious metals came onto the scene and were very popular for wedding rings at this time.  Platinum’s strength allowed jewelry designers new freedom to create intricate designs in the metal work, and the design movements of the time prompted many beautiful and unique wedding ring settings.

Some of the most beautiful antique wedding rings are influenced by the designs of the Edwardian period, about 1901 – 1915.  White on white was the trend during this era; there was a high use of platinum, diamonds, and pearls.  The designs were very feminine, fluid, and detailed.  Again, thanks to platinum’s strength over gold, Edwardian wedding rings could be designed with an airier framework and intricate detail.

Antique wedding rings from the Art Deco period, about 1920 – 1930, are also a popular choice today.  This was a period in America heavily influenced by culture and technology.  Fashion, art, and architecture were modeled after advances in transportation, economic hardship, and new cultural freedom.  Platinum was very popular for wedding rings at this time, but so was white gold because this new metal alloy was less expensive and not as rare.  Antique wedding rings from the Art Deco era are still very beautiful and unique, but much less whimsical than the Edwardian period.  Strong lines and colored gemstones were often used.

Today jewelry making technology has advanced further than the designers of the past could have ever imagined, and almost any design can be achieved.  Wedding ring creators of the past were limited in their use of materials and tools, but managed to create timeless designs that are still heavily appreciated and sought after.  This is why antique wedding rings make the perfect choice for any bride.  Take a look at some of these beautiful examples below:
