Coordinating Men’s and Women’s Wedding rings

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Wedding rings and other jewelry have changed a lot over the past several decades, and while today antique wedding rings and classic gold wedding rings are still very popular, there are more choices on the market to choose from.  Today we see wedding rings that make use of alternative metals such as stainless steel and titanium.  Historically inspired wedding rings are all over the market with patterns such as the Greek Key or the Celtic Knot.  There are also sleek and sophisticated modern styles like men’s wedding rings that include black rubber.  While jewelry isn’t quite as indecisive as fashion, it does ebb and flow with current trends and changes with new technologies.

Traditionally the engagement ring was the part of the wedding ring set that had all the pizazz; the wedding band would be a simple gold ring that had a message or date engraved on the inside, and the bride and groom would wear a matching set.  Many brides and grooms still follow this tradition, but today this is changing, and many soon to be married couples do not prefer wedding ring sets.  Several things likely influence this.  First of all, men are much more style conscience these days, thanks to media and celebrity promotion, and so more men care about what their wedding ring will look like; they want it to reflect their personal style.  Another reason for the change in the wedding ring set trend, is that there are more styles of wedding rings availed on the market today so couples don’t have to stick with the traditional gold band.  Both women’s wedding rings and men’s wedding rings have come a long way!

If you and your future spouse would like a matching wedding ring set but can’t seem to agree on a style, I suggest coming to a compromise by purchasing two separate wedding rings that have similar qualities and features.  Try this exercise: each of you selects five different wedding rings that you like.  Then compare the men’s wedding ring choices to the woman’s wedding ring choices and select the two that best match.  This way you both have the perfect wedding ring that reflects your individual personality and style, but coordinates well with your spouses ring, further signifying your eternal love and commitment to each other.

Antique Wedding Ring Sales Surge During Difficult Times

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

American’s have always been a nostalgic bunch.  No matter the current fashion trend there is always an appreciation for vintage and antique designs.  For years many have forgone the contemporary and instead purchased antique wedding rings, furniture, clothing, and accessories.  In the early 1900s the modern movement began, but as opposed to completely embracing the new design styles, Americans sparked a revival period of the Classics from centuries before.

In this country we saw homes designed with ancient Greek, medieval England, and Colonial American influences, as opposed to the new American style of architecture that was developing.  In fact, it was not until the victorious end of World War Two and the positive national vibe that winning the battle prompted, that people in this country began to truly embrace futuristic styles.  Our national mood had been lifted; we were keeping our faces pointed ahead, there was no desire to look back.

During times of economic or societal depression, Americans are exceedingly more nostalgic, and contemporary designers have the most difficult time with product sales. The idea that bygone eras were happier times gives antique wedding rings, furniture, art, clothing, and accessories a deeper meaning for the buyer, and owning these pieces of nostalgia improves their psychology.  People flock to flea markets, estate sales, and online stores and auctions for little pieces of the past, perhaps also because they hope to save money on their purchase.  When money is tight, we hold onto it a little stronger, so our purchases become more emotional.  Choosing to buy an antique wedding ring over a contemporary style gives the buyer the sense that their wedding ring is extra special, and thus worth the expense.

In America’s current state of economic and political strife, antique wedding rings, antique engagement rings, and antique themed weddings and wedding gowns are all the rage.  Many brides are purchasing their wedding gowns from vintage clothing stores because the history makes the dress more meaningful as well as less expensive.  This trend continues not just because the antique styles are nostalgic and less expensive, but also because they are more available.  Many out of work and down on their luck Americans have been selling their family heirlooms for cash, increasing the supply of antique wedding rings and wedding gowns in the market.

Antiques, such as wedding rings, are also appreciated for their beauty. Antique wedding rings are more detailed than many modern styles, making them unique.  In the early 1900s, new technologies were introduced that allowed jewelry designers the ability to create detailed and intricate designs with platinum.  The fashion trends of the era also urged elaborate details in wedding and engagement rings and designers created many very elaborate pieces with scrollwork, filigree, and floral designs. If you would like a ring reminiscent of earlier years, take a look at these antique wedding and engagement rings pictured below.

Trend: Diamond Wedding Rings

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

The strength and beauty of diamonds comes to symbolize the love and commitment of two people in marriage.  Their unmatched brilliance and luster have earned them a place in wedding ring design, but traditionally, the diamonds in wedding ring sets were reserved for the engagement ring, and the wedding bands were simple gold bands that matched between the bride and groom.  Today, our fashion senses are increasing, and men’s wedding rings as well as women’s wedding rings are becoming more stylish and unique.  While some brides and grooms choose to match their wedding rings, others opt for different choices that suit their individual styles and personalities.  Diamonds aren’t just for engagement rings anymore, and they are no longer just a girl’s best friend.  Thanks to the new styles in men’s wedding rings, diamonds are a guy’s best friend too!

Diamond wedding rings are a hot trend, and because of the strong requests from consumers, jewelry designers are creating more and more unique diamond wedding ring options.  Many women love the look of pairing their diamond engagement ring with a diamond wedding band, but now that it has become commonplace for the groom to also wear a ring, men are opting for diamond wedding rings as well. Two-tone gold and diamond wedding rings are very versatile; the use of both colors of metal means they will coordinate well with your entire jewelry collection. White gold and diamond wedding rings, platinum and diamond wedding rings, and titanium and diamond wedding rings are also common choices.

The white metal of platinum beautifully enhances the sparkle of a diamond, making this a popular wedding ring metal for decades.  Today, however, the hottest trend in diamond wedding bands is titanium.  This is also a very white metal so it serves to promote the diamond’s brilliance the same way as platinum, but it is much less expensive.  Also, titanium is stronger than the precious metals like white gold and platinum, ensuring a beautiful diamond wedding ring that will last a lifetime. The colors and properties of diamonds and titanium pair very well together, giving the bride and groom a symbol of their love and commitment that is equally as strong.

Eternity rings, also called anniversary rings, are also being used as a bride’s wedding band.  These rings are surrounded by a row of diamonds and pair extremely well with a diamond engagement ring.  Take a look at some of these diamond wedding ring options below:

Fit for a Princess

Monday, December 28th, 2009

It doesn’t matter if you’re a girly girl like Sleeping Beauty or more of a sporty daredevil like Ariel, every little girl dreams of becoming a princess when she grows up.  Since the odds of every girl marrying into a royal family or discovering some secret royal heritage are slim, it has become a popular trend to live out childhood fantasies by having a wedding fit for a princess.

As in many themed weddings, it all starts with the ring…meaning in “engagement lingo”, that it all starts with you men.  If you know that your fiancé has, what I refer to as, a “Cinderella Complex” then why not play the role of Prince Charming?  It might seem cheesy at first for you macho men out there but remember, all fairy tales inevitably end happily ever after.  If you sweep your princess off her feet with the all the romance and grandeur of a Disney movie you are guaranteed by the laws of fairytale world to always get the girl in the end.

Here are a few ring ideas that will be sure to woo your pretty princess girlfriend into becoming your beloved betrothed Queen:

The Princess Cut

Besides the name, of course, this particular cut is sure to dazzle your special lady, even if she is a mermaid under the sea.  The shape of a princess cut, when looking at the face of the diamond, is always square or rectangle shaped.  If you then look at its profile, the diamond has the shape of an inverted pyramid with prongs typically securing each corner.  The princess diamond is a ring fit for royalty not only in name, but also because of the regal nature of the cut.  The princess cut diamond reflects a high degree of light causing its many facets to sparkle brilliantly and continue to shine in the darkest of castles.

Royal Insignia

Throughout history all royal families have a crest or insignia that represents their family’s heritage.  If your fiancé-to-be has close ties to her family’s past, embrace it by researching her genealogy and incorporating a particular crest or insignia that represents her lineage.  Use this technique with caution and only proceed if you have found proper evidence supporting the particular symbol you choose.

Regal Colors

If you choose to accent the ring with color, any rich vibrant color will do.  Purples, dark blues or even emeralds reflect the luxuriousness of a royal crown.  Stay away from light or pale shades.

Princessology

Cinderella rode in a pumpkin coach and wore glass slippers and Sleeping Beauty’s man pursued her atop a white steed.  Find a particular princess that your bride relates most closely to and don’t be afraid to incorporate these symbols onto the ring.

You should be warned that such a wedding will include many other extravagances such as elaborate gowns and tiaras and you may even end up in a castle.  Just remember, she may be a princess for a day but she will be your wife for a lifetime so why not indulge her just this once?

Amy Winehouse Engaged to Ex Husband

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

Rumor has it that British songstress and tabloid queen Amy Winehouse is engaged…to her ex husband!  The two divorced officially this past September, and while members of Winehouse’s inner circle deny the reunion of the volatile couple, Blake Fielder-Civil recently told the British newspaper The Sun, that quote:

“We’re back together, and we’re engaged. Amy and I have talked about getting married again and starting a family – we both definitely want kids.
“This time we are doing things properly and hopefully that will help both our families come round to the idea. We’ve both been through a lot but we love each other the same as ever. We’ve tried to get on with our lives and to see other people, but it wasn’t the same. There’s no one like Amy. She will always be the love of my life.”

Amy Winehouse has been no stranger to drama and tabloid gossip.  As the first British singer to win five Grammy Awards for her album “Back to Black,” Winehouse has struggled since 2006 with many additions.  She has admitted to bouts of self-harm, depression, drug addition, alcoholism, violence, and eating disorders.  Her family fears a reunion with her ex-husband now fiancé Fielder-Civil, because he introduced Winehouse to heroin and crack cocaine, which the two have both been in and out of rehab to kick.  Her very protective father controls much of what Winehouse does and believes that the singer spiraled out of control after her grandmother, whom she was very close to, died in 2006.  Mitch Winehouse told reporters that he has kept his daughters business in the media as a way to reach her, and in regards to her relationship with Blake, “It will be a disaster if he’s not out of the picture.”

The divorce was initially filed by Fielder-Civil, a high school drop out and former music video assistant, because of accusations of adultery.  This stems from a public affair Winehouse had with actor Josh Bowman, where she told the press that she was, “in love again, and I don’t need drugs.  The whole marriage was based on doing drugs; for the time being I’ve just forgotten I’m even married.” Blake now says that the divorce was due to pressure from both sides of their family.  Both Winehouse’s and Fielder-Civil’s parents want to see the couple separate for good, Blake’s father even made a public plea for fans to boycott Winehouse’s music.

Blake is currently seeking treatment for his drug addiction, and because of a serious health scare, so is Winehouse.  Apparently, thanks to the damage done to her lungs by smoking crack, they now function at only a 70% capacity.  Doctors warn Amy that if she continues to use drugs and smoke, her mild and very early case of emphysema will land her in an oxygen mask.

No word yet from Winehouse on the status of her recent re-engagement to Blake, but she has been spotted wearing an engagement ring and visiting his apartment.

Christmas Wedding Ring Stories: Some take while others give

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

The winter Holidays are full of emotion, both the negative and the positive kind.  During this favorite time of year, many people feel in the giving mood and not only purchase gifts for their friends and loved ones, but donate gifts, time, and money to charities.  When the Christmas Spirit is alive in the air, many offer more than they would during other less festive times of the year, and organizations that rely on donations look forward to December contributions.  While the Holiday’s are a giving time, they are also a time where many less fortunate folks can become depressed and perhaps act in harmful and negative ways.  There is an increased stress level among many scrooge-like Americans, and crime can actually increase.  The winter holiday news is full of stories of both the giving and the taking kind.

This month in Edmonton there was one such event, unfortunately not the giving kind.  Cam Fraser has been playing Santa Claus for the local “Uncles and Aunts at Large,” Christmas party for the past 25 years, but this year may regret it.  Prior to attending the event, Fraser placed his wife’s unique diamond wedding ring into a small jewelers bag so that he could take it in to have a missing diamond repaired.  Fraser was sure that the ring was in his pocket when he changed into his Santa Suite, but later it was missing.  It was not an extremely expensive diamond wedding ring, but it was rather unique.  Two-tone white and yellow gold, the wedding ring has five diamonds surrounded by several smaller diamonds.  He is so interested in the return of his wife’s wedding ring that Cam is offering a reward for its safe return and the jewelry store is aiding in his cause.

Stealing Santa’s wife’s unique diamond wedding ring definitely counteracts the positive Christmas spirit, but there are also new stories that remind us some people haven’t forgotten what is important this time of year.  Outside a King Soopers in Westminster County, someone slipped an extra special donation into the red Salvation Army kettle.  The Salvation Army has placed volunteers outside store entrances for decades, ringing their bells and eager for donations to help the organization feed and house the needy.  They are used to receiving extra coins, and perhaps the occasional dollar bills, but this time they received something much more valuable.  The mystery person, whether with a full and giving heart or an empty and broken heart, slipped an antique platinum and diamond wedding ring valued at $1400 inside the bell ringer’s red kettle.  There was no mistaking the gift as an accident because the ring had been placed inside a small plastic bag with a note that read, “For Salvation Army.”  The owner of this ring may have had some sad emotions backing their generous donation, but at least we can be reminded that while some take from others this time of year, some are very eager to give.

Tiger Woods’ Wife Seen Without her Wedding Ring!

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Elin Nordegren, married to golf pro Tiger Woods, has recently been seen without  her wedding ring.  Likely due to Tiger’s alleged extramarital affairs, it seems that the couple’s five-year marriage is coming to an end.  Some Nordegren insiders report that Tiger’s wife may be on the fence regarding the divorce, likely because the couple shares two children together.  It is also reported that Tiger is trying to hold on to his family and the couple have been going through extensive marriage counseling.  If the two do actually divorce, it will be the most expensive settlement in celebrity history; Nordegren and Woods signed a $300 million dollar pre-nuptial agreement prior to their wedding.

Tiger met Elin back in 2001 while playing in the British Open in England.  The Stockholm born model was working as an au pair for the Swedish golfer Jesper Parnevek.  Two years into their relationship, while vacationing in South Africa at the Shaamwari Game Reserve, Tiger proposed to Elin during a sunset walk.  They were married in October of 2004 at a $2 million event held on the 19thhole of the Sandy Lane Golf Resort, in Barbados.  Hairdressers were flown in from England, 500 black and red roses were imported, and approximately 150 guests attended the event.  The music at the reception was provided by the band Hootie and the Blowfish, and the wedding guests including celebrities such as Oprah, Michael Jordan, and Charles Barclay.

Tiger has been very vocal to the press over the years about his wonderful relationship with Elin.  According to one of his whistle blowing mistresses, this has all been a PR stunt.  Now with two children, Sam born in 2007 and Charlie born in 2009, the couple’s marriage seems to have been a sham.  In November of this year, the first extramarital allegations surfaced, which Tiger adamantly denied.  Since that time, roughly ten other girls have come forward admitting that they too had a relationship with the pro golfer.  No longer able to dodge the rumors, Tiger made this statement to the press:

“I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children. I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I’ve done, but I want to do my best to try.”

“I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart. I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves. I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect. I am dealing with my behavior and personal failings behind closed doors with my family. Those feelings should be shared by us alone.”

One of Tigers affairs continued for more than three years and it is reported that he even had a fling while Elin was pregnant.  In addition to his mistresses, Tiger has also been a strip club frequenter, other news now surfacing because of his affairs.  According to Elin’s close friends, divorce is a hundred percent certainty.  She is deeply hurt, and claims that she could forgive one transgression, but eleven is just too much.  Seems with all his millions and fame, Tiger can’t buy his way out of this one!

Handwoven Wedding Rings: Beauty in Simplicity

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Many years ago, the Celts created hand woven items such as jewelry, as an offering to their Gods.  Since that time, Celtic knot and rope symbols have come to symbolize relationships, the joining of two people in marriage, or our eternal lives as spiritual beings.  Handwoven wedding rings have been used for centuries.  In fact, the first wedding rings in recorded history were woven hemp bands used by the Egyptians.  Today, when you purchase a handwoven or knotted wedding band made of precious metals, such as gold, silver, or platinum, you are buying a symbolic and timeless piece of jewelry that represents rich cultural history.

Another benefit to choosing a handwoven wedding ring is that while simple, it is also delicately detailed and more unique than a standard wedding band.  The tightly woven strands of gold create a chiaroscuro effect, or a contrast between light and shadow, allowing the piece itself to create the design, as opposed to engraved pattern.

Handwoven wedding bands are also very versatile.  You can select a handwoven wedding ring that incorporates more than one color of metal, such as gold and white gold, so it is sure to match everything in your jewelry collection.  You can even find a handwoven wedding band that uses three colors, yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold, such as this example here.

Handwoven rings are great choices for both men and women, and offer the bride and groom a way to tie the look of their rings together.  The woman can select a handwoven wedding band that is small and delicate, while the man’s wedding ring can we woven with heavier strands of gold, or in a wider band, giving him a more masculine wedding ring.

To create a handwoven ring, the strands of gold, platinum, or silver are heated to increase their pliability and allow the jeweler to bend them to the desired shape.  Metal working tools are used, but the jeweler must also have incredible hand strength in order to produce a well-made handwoven wedding ring.  After the metal is woven, the artist then fuses the ends together, creating a seamless and beautiful wedding ring.

Take a look at some of these beautiful examples of handwoven wedding rings.

The Perfect Anniversary Date

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

Congratulations, after years of wedded bliss, it’s time to celebrate a landmark Anniversary.  You bought her the ring, now you need some ideas on how to give it to her.  I know you guys, and no, tossing it to her before you grab a bagel on your way to work is not going to cut it!  Here are a few ideas on ways to make this evening the date to trump all dates, the anniversary that will remind your lovely bride why she married you in the first place.

Bring her back to the beginning.

Revisiting the site of your first date is a fun way to reminisce about when you first fell in love and how nervous you both were in the beginning.  By this point, you know each other better than a mom knows the number of freckles on her little baby’s hiney and to “make it like the first time” will no doubt bring back the ol’ butterflies and sweaty palms you had so many years ago.

Sneak away for a romantic weekend.

This one takes some extra planning and forethought, but there’s nothing like the look on a woman’s face when she finds out that what she thought was a weekend at the in-law’s house, is really three days and two nights in Cabo or, if you’re a winter wedding couple, a cozy cabin in the middle of a light snow fall.  (Just remember to pack her a separate bag for the trip.)

Do it wedding singer style.

Find a music teacher with a little extra time on her hands to give you a music lesson or two.  Then, do a little research and find anyone that will let you publicly serenade your lady to the tune of the song the two of you danced to at your wedding so many years ago.  Make sure to practice, think of Mr. Schuester in Fox’s new hit Glee, so as to dazzle your wife with skills she never knew you had.  Try such venues as jazz clubs, ball parks, plays or even a concert…anywhere you have a little pull would be helpful, but you’ll be surprised how many romantics there are out there willing to help.

Make a home movie.

Gather all the pictures and videos you can find of the two of you over the years, pick some romantic music and with the help of a friend or some creative computer software you can make a pretty darn good movie!  Design fake movie tickets and stock your special seats with cushions and wine if you want to add that special touch.  Whether or not the movie is Oscar worthy, there isn’t a woman in the world who doesn’t love a good chick flick.

A beautiful Anniversary Ring will speak for itself, of course, but presenting it to her in the perfect setting will make you the hero for years to come.  That is…if you don’t do something to end up in the dog house, then good luck because whatever spectacular event you plan this year, you’ll have to top it again next year!

A Christmas Wedding: Unifying the Bride, the Broom, and Christ

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

Sleigh bells, carolers, and nativity scenes make a beautiful backdrop for your big day. If you have decided to plan a Christmas wedding, perhaps you chose this special time of year because the birth of Christ has an important meaning to you, and you would like God to have a significant role in your marriage.  Whether your wedding is on December 25th or sometime during the Christmas season, tying the knot during the holidays makes this favorite time of year even more special, and gives you another great anniversary to celebrate every year.

Having a Christian wedding is more than merely holding the ceremony in a church.  There are other things you can do to include Christ in your big day.  From the décor you select, to the ceremony you plan, to the wedding rings you choose, here are a few ideas to express your love for God, and your spouse-to-be.

  • Ask your pastor to open and close your ceremony with prayer.
  • Ask the pastor to tell the story of the birth of Christ during the ceremony.
  • Light a Unity Candle, which symbolizes the union of the bride, the groom, and Christ.
  • Incorporate a bible verse that is significant to you, perhaps I Corinthians 13, in your wedding program.
  • Repeat this verse on your reception napkins, along with your names and wedding date.
  • Purchase a special bible and carry this along with your flowers as you walk down the isle.  Pass this tradition, and the bible onto your daughter for her wedding.
  • Include time in your ceremony for quiet prayer between one another, and thank Christ for the gift of your new spouse.
  • Instead of the Unity Candle ceremony, consider the Cord of Three Strands.  This represents the bride, the groom, and Christ at the center, binding you together and strengthening your union.
  • There are many beautiful options for your wedding band.  You could select a simple ring and engrave a Christian message or bible verse inside, or how about selecting a ring that is designed to remind you of your devotion to Christ and your marriage, and purchase a Christian wedding band?  There is a large selection of Christian wedding rings here, and look at  these two great examples below:

After the ceremony, years into your marriage, wearing a Christian wedding ring will remind you of your commitment to include Christ in your lives.  Whether your wedding is scheduled during the holiday’s to further rejoice the birth of Christ, or you want to incorporate Him in a ceremony you have planned outside the holiday season, these other Christian wedding ideas can add meaning to your big day and promote your desire the join together with your new spouse, and Jesus Christ.
